Women in Engineering Academic Visitors Funding – 2019

UNSW Sydney – Australia’s Global University

Simona Binetti  of this center awarded  this grant for the 2019

The collaboration between UNSW researchers and A. Prof Binetti from the University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB) started eight years ago when one of A. Prof Binetti PhD students (Manuel Morgano) spent six months (June-Nov 2011) working with Prof. Conibeer (SPREE). The topic of this collaboration was “electrical and optical characterization of nanostructured silicon oxide films for advanced photovoltaic applications” . Prof Binetti started her collaboration with Dr Hameiri two years ago focusing on micro-photoluminescence (uPL) measurements of silicon wafers. Prof Binetti is one of the world experts for this type of measurement and her experience has enhanced the capabilities of UNSW in this research area. This collaboration already led for a joint publication. Prof Binetti was also a partner on an Australian ACAP grant proposal “Taking n-type wafers to their ultimate lifetime limit”. She was supposed to lead the University of Milano-Bicocca involvement in this project and to manage the uPL measurements to detect defects in silicon solar cells. Despite ranking high, this proposal was not successful. Visit of Prof Binetti will leverage the existing network and will enhance the collaboration between UNSW and UNIMIB. A uPL system is developed at these days in SPREE. Measurements done at UNSW Prof Binetti will provide UNSW SPREE researchers a unique opportunity to be trained by one of the world expert in this area.

The visit will promote the UNSW Faculty of Engineering to talented female researchers who are part of Prof Binetti wide network. This network includes researchers from the University Milano Bicocca, from other Italian universities and from other research institutes across Europe. Currently Prof Binetti is in charge of an Italian project devoted to promoting women in Material Science fields. The visit will promote UNSW as an institution committed to supporting women in engineering. A report by the candidate regarding her visit at UNSW will be delivered in the next edition of the “Women in Science” conference and to the Interdepartmental Center for Gender Studies (ABCD) of the University of Milano-Bicocca.
